I'm completely inspired and not sure where to start. The last couple of days have been completely unbelievable...first of all, I met with the Regional Director of UNICEF and had the greatest chat. At Hep, our President just wrote a book and we're donating $1 from every transaction to UNICEF. There's also tons of opportunity for Hep to partner with UNICEF Winnipeg office for ideas and to make connections to the corporate community. Such an exciting conversation...we talked a lot about how they work within the UN and how large scale the differences that they make are. They don't tend to immunize a village or build one school in a community...they will immunize a whole country and build enough schools and libraries to fill three countries. They think big, act large, and have a huge pull with lobbying and government policies. When I get back from my trip I will be concentrating major efforts in volunteering with them.
Also of note: they are just launching the Tap Project for the 2nd year in a row. During the week of March 22 - 29, when you're in a restaurant and the waiter asks you to pay $1 for the water you'd usually receive for free, say OF COURSE! That $1 can provide clean water for a day for 40 children! Or, 40 days of clean water for one child. Powerful!
The girls there are so inspiring too. Another employee at the Winnipeg UNICEF, just got back from Kenya where she was in the fields helping to administer immunizations and educate on AIDS. While talking to both of the girls there, they both mentioned that they do their part by sponsoring a child. Cat uses the Lift One project and I thought it was worth mentioning. Check out her page here: http://www.liftoneproject.org/goto/catross
And - she drew my attention to a couple more important resources to know in Winnipeg. This includes the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation, who, if I understand correctly, you have to be registered with as a not-for-profit. Great resource: www.mcic.ca
