Yet another glimpse into the area I'll be working in there:
Idex’s first social development initiative utilizing international volunteers began in the rural communities of Rajasthan in 2001. Since then, volunteers have been supporting wide-ranging social development projects while working immersed in Rajasthan communities and experiencing India’s authentic culture and rural way of life. Idex’s Rajasthan network extends across three project areas and includes five separate volunteer programs.
Rajasthan is a vibrant state where tradition and history blend with contemporary life styles. Every region has its distinct dialect, food, music and dance. The varieties of dances are colorful expressions of celebration and festivity, which make the desert region come to light. The state spans over the Thar Desert, the dry Aravali range running from the southwest to the northeast. Despite these harsh conditions, the people and their cultures have adapted and flourished for thousands of years. In the rural areas of Rajasthan, the land is rich with a dynamic array of people and their vivid, colorful cultures.
While rural areas of Rajasthan are wealthy in terms of culture, its people are increasingly subject to social and economic challenges that demand intervention on comprehensive scales. In isolated regions of Rajasthan, particular groups (or castes) of people, are branded by communities as inferior and therefore undeserving of education, decent employment, or personal respect. And even those who benefit from a higher social status suffer from relative poverty, illiteracy, and ineffective social institutions. As a result, Idex confronts the social and economic challenges in Rajasthan through volunteer intervention projects that support (click here).
