I often have unrest in my life...thoughts often race through my mind about what more I could be doing, how I'm going to get to where I want to be in life, how I am going to find the exact niche where I can make my difference, and on the list runs. The exciting part of this, is that every thought that comes through my mind comes with optimism (for the most part) that as long as I keep thinking and asking myself the important questions, I'll get there one day.
So as I was just reading one of my notorious "self-help" books, called "Happiness Now" I came across a couple of quotes that resonated with me.
"We see things not as they are, but as we are."
Each time I get a little worried that I'm not doing enough, or I doubt that I'll ever do anything that makes a big difference, I try to pull back and remember that I'm trying. This book talks about how you see anything external to you is how you see yourself. So, to help all the external worries or doubts, I continue to do things that make me feel GREAT! Like volunteering, or having intense talks with friends. And I have to say, in the past couple of months it's been working...my thoughts tend to make me feel like everything in my life is somehow on the right track, in some offbeat kind of way.
I questioned what I could do for a couple of years after I started asking myself the vital, important questions about humanity...then I made up my mind that I would take the first step to a future of trying to do what I can to help...then I found the trip to Africa and decided in that moment that I'd go, regardless of money or my job or timing. I just took the leap of faith. And to be honest, it's worked out better than I ever dreamed. So...this leads me to my 2nd favourite quote in the book:
"to change the world, first change your mind"
And now isn't that the truth.
