Nelson Mandela is a personal hero of mine. I remember hearing about him, his time spent in prison, and his perserverance for the African population, one day a couple years ago. A man who spent over 40 years inaugurated in prison. A man who thought deeply, read much and tried his best to understand human nature. I was surprised, shocked and amazed at this man's actions, at what he stood for and the power of his spirit. And so, I've tried to learn about him as much as I possibly can.
There is a debate of who spoke this following speech, whether it was Nelson Mandela or if he really spoke it at all. Either way, it shouldn't matter. What matters, is that it was made a famous quotation, read by millions, and can help to shed so much light on the human experience.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
Let your light shine.
