I thought I'd post here this wonderful email that changed my life:
Dear Tamara,
You have been accepted into the South Africa Volunteer Program. As requested, our volunteer partner in South Africa has indicated that they can place you in the program for 4 weeks starting in April 2009.
The program begins on the 1st of each month so if you are unable to arrive before the 1st please let us know before securing your placement so we can look at alternative months that would be available.
THE PROGRAM
The philosophy of the program is as follows:
- to provide a sanctuary for wildlife, free from the pressures created by mankind and other predators
- to preserve an increasingly endangered wilderness, bankenveld
- to offer volunteers a unique blend of conservation experience and cultural exploration
- to educate and encourage active interest in South African environmental and wildlife conservation
Although there are some seasonal variations, you will most likely be involved in the following activities:
Reserve Maintenance: fencing work (construction, clearing, painting), fence inspections, veld evaluations, exotic plant management, water testing, and land reclamation projects (e.g. management of soil erosion and bush encroachment).
Wildlife conservation work: participation in game management, including game assessment and reporting, and anti-poaching practises, and collecting, transporting and distributing meat donations (for vulture community).
Learning program: Aside from providing on-the-job training, we run three informal workshops which cover basic conservation principles, as well as veld and game management. We'll show you how to track game, and conduct a game count too (providing sufficient volunteer numbers).
ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers reside in the home belonging to our partner. Also living here are employees of the reserve and several dogs and cats. The rooms house between 2 and 6 people each. Males and females are given separate rooms, unless they are travelling as a couple. Each room is fitted with bunk beds, bed-side tables and lamps, chairs and ample cupboard space. Mosquito repellent devices are installed in each room. Shared bathrooms include hot / cold running water and ‘western style’ toilets. The property is connected to mains electricity and water from the tap is safe to drink. Phone, Fax and Internet Access are also available for a small charge.
FURTHER STEPS: Later in the process you may be required to submit further information about your individual skills and experience. This is in order to ensure quality for both our partners and volunteers.
FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCES: To hear from some of those who have already volunteered in the South Africa program please read http://www.volunteer.org.nz/southafrica/diaries/. To read some of the feedback emails we have had check out: http://www.volunteer.org.nz/southafrica/feedback.php
