My #1 charitable organization, the man who changed my life, John Wood, releases the Room to Read 2010 Annual Report.
This guy's unstoppable and so is the work he does. This morning, reading his update made me cry. Yes, a lot makes me cry...but imagine this:
"Thinking about our goal of reaching 10 million children can be daunting. What keeps me optimistic, focused and on track are the individual children I meet during my journeys. Just last week I received a touching email from Prabitha, a 17-year-old girl from Nepal, writing with exciting news. "I have just gotten my first email account. Mr. Wood, this is the first email I have ever sent, and I am writing to share with you my progress." Prabitha had learned to read at the first Room to Read library in Bahundanda, Nepal and she had welcomed me and a group of our investors during a site visit a year earlier. When she told me of her dreams, I encouraged her to study hard, keep reading and remain in touch. One year later, her email arrives, proudly informing me that she is now studying in Kathmandu. She had received her School Leaving Certificate, and now, she happily reported "I am beginning my studies towards my goal - TO BE A DOCTOR.
Not only did her story inspire me, it also seemed a fitting overlap. Prabitha's own educational path had coincided perfectly with our organization's first decade. She was in first grade the year Room to Read was founded, and she begins her second decade of studies, more ambitious and optimistic than ever, as we start our next decade of world-changing impact."
She was in FIRST GRADE and due to Room to Read support - she's studying to be a doctor.
That's what we're here for. I have no doubt.
