...when our hearts are full we need much less

  • Why the Hope?

The defining moment in my life that shifted the way I was thinking...and brought me to ubuntu.

  • Who am I?

    Great question. Tough to answer.

  • What I do

In the sense of living and breathing and working and playing.

Well things are looking much brighter this morning. First of all, I already upchucked (that's not really the bright part. Bad thing to lead with). I took my malaria pill on a completely empty stomach this morning and voila - the nothing that I had in my stomach came up. That's not a fun first morning in India. But I guess it's to be expected. Jimena is the 24 year old Mexican girl that I'm rooming with and who just recently arrived as well last night, so we had a chance to visit this morning. She is from Mexico City and is in psychology,  and will be doing some work here at the day care.

We are staying at a small apartment down the way from the IDEX HQ because there are too many volunteers there right now. I'm not sure if we'll get moved here or not, but our meals are all here. We came over for breakfast (on the way, sure enough there were about 10 cows) and met a whack of new volunteers / interns. There are 35 in total doing all kinds of super interesting things. Mike from New Zealand is here to teach soccer to the children before and after school. Many finnish girls are here doing their internships in therapy or working with the HIV orphanages. The other canadian (who everyone keeps wanting me to meet so badly, "you're both from Canada!!" haha) is doing some kind of film or cinema studies. I've only met one woman who is doing the womens camp and her name is Maria Theresa. She's an adorable 50+ woman and I think Thursday morning I will go with her there.

Breakfast was delicious, porridge, an egg and toast. Also, there is a drink here like a banana smoothie that I've fallen head over heels for. It's called lassie or something. There is no coffee. I am on a hunt to find instant coffee. Anyway, over breakfast I recounted a hilarious story from my flight to many volunteers this morning and we were all laughing. Basically, there were two people in front of me on my flight to Chicago. They sat down and started telling their stories to each other - the man was in his 30's and travelled all over for work but was from Chicago. The woman was older, from dallas I think. He talked about his family and children and she had a HUGE diamond ring on so was obviously married. Throughout the flight they had about 8 bottles of red wine each and proceeded to...make out for an entire hour. I was sitting with an Indian gentleman and it made us both very uncomfortable! Like really? Clean up your act, married people!

Then they both fell asleep and so I also saw the hangover side of it where they where you could tell they when they woke up they were both like ...did that really happen...? It was kind of funny and a little disturbing, to see some blatant cheating, but had all of us volunteers in stitches. anyway, Jimena and I are going to the Pink City Centre this morning I think to hit the markets for snacks & clothes. Our orientation isn't actually until tomorrow now. She has promised to teach me Spanish and I will help her with her English.  Should be a good day of rest and Indian markets!

    Love you guys!
